Data sources

Every camera here is a live stream its own operator published openly and allowed other sites to embed. Before one is listed we check automatically that it is live and that its provider permits off-site embedding; anything failing either check is never published.

What we do not do

We do not scan for or connect to cameras directly. Feeds exposed by default passwords or misconfigured devices — the kind that have made the news — are not something this site can surface, because it has no mechanism for reaching a camera that its operator has not deliberately published on a streaming platform. There is no path from an unsecured device to this map.

What we exclude

  • Homes, interiors and other private spaces, even when publicly streamed.
  • Views whose purpose is watching people rather than seeing a place, including cameras trained on individuals or on people in vulnerable circumstances.
  • Military sites, border posts, prisons and comparable security infrastructure.
  • Anything we cannot confirm is where it claims to be.

People in shot

The cameras here look at public places — crossings, beaches, harbours, mountains — from a distance at which the scene, not any individual, is the subject. Responsibility for filming and publishing rests with the operator, who is credited and linked on every camera page. We host, record and re-encode nothing: the video plays in the provider's own player, exactly as it does on their channel.

Where the rest comes from

  • Video — embedded via each provider's official player. Nothing is proxied, copied or stored on our servers.
  • Location, time zone and sun times — curated coordinates per place, with local time and sunrise/sunset computed from them.
  • Map — OpenStreetMap data, rendered through OpenFreeMap.
  • Climate — Köppen-Geiger classification from Beck, H.E., N.E. Zimmermann, T.R. McVicar, N. Vergopolan, A. Berg and E.F. Wood, “Present and future Köppen-Geiger climate classification maps at 1-km resolution”, Scientific Data 5:180214 (2018), used under CC BY 4.0.
  • Weather — forecasts from MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute), used under CC BY 4.0. Only weather a camera could show you is ever displayed: heavy rain, snow, thunder or fog, never a passing shower you would not see.
  • Rainfall — GPM IMERG precipitation imagery from NASA GIBS, public domain. A satellite estimate about five hours old: enough to show where a storm is, not what a particular street is doing.
  • Volcanoes — the Weekly Volcanic Activity Report from the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program, used with credit. It lists every volcano with new or continuing eruptive activity for a named week, and the week is always shown with it: the report is published once those days have ended, so it can be a few days old by the time you read it. Whether anything is visible right now is a question only the picture can answer.
  • Aurora — the 30-minute OVATION forecast from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, public domain. It gives the chance of seeing the aurora overhead at each point of a one-degree grid. It cannot know whether the sky there is dark or clear, and both have to be true before anyone sees anything — which is what the cameras are for.
  • Relief — elevation from Mapzen Terrain Tiles on AWS Open Data, built from USGS 3DEP, NASA SRTM, GMTED2010, NOAA ETOPO1 and national datasets from Australia, Austria, Canada, New Zealand, Norway and the UK. Full credits and licences are listed by the project. Heights are exaggerated so the shape reads at a glance.
  • World Heritage sites — from Wikidata (CC0), not UNESCO's own list, whose terms require written permission to republish. Sites that exist to remember an atrocity are left off: this is a map for idle curiosity, and they are not for that.

Removal

If you operate a camera listed here, or you appear in one and would rather not, contact us and we will remove it. We act on operator requests first and do not ask for a justification.
